About Nicole
Every summer, hundreds of thousands of Midwestern families pile into the minivan or truck and make the drive south to Gulf Shores, Alabama. And honestly? We get it. The white sand, the warm Gulf water, the seafood — it’s one of the best beach destinations in the country, and it’s a whole lot closer than Florida for most of us.

We’ve made the trip to the Gulf Shores and Fort Morgan area three times as a family now. And while the vacation itself is incredible, there’s one part that used to sting: the hotel bill.
Until we figured out points and miles.
Now? We don’t pay for our hotel. Not a dollar. And in this post, I’m going to walk you through exactly how to do the same thing — including the five best beachfront hotels in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach that you can book completely free with points, plus a strategy for vacation rental families that can knock $750 to $1,000 off your VRBO bill every single summer.
Let’s get into it.
Why Gulf Shores Is a Points and Miles Goldmine (That Nobody’s Talking About)
Here’s the thing about Gulf Shores: it flies under the radar in the points world. Most travel bloggers are writing about Bali and the Maldives. But if you’re a family in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, or Indiana, Gulf Shores is your beach. And that means the strategy applies to you.
Both major hotel loyalty programs — Hilton Honors and IHG One Rewards — have beachfront properties right on the Gulf. And several of them fall into point ranges that are very achievable with just one credit card welcome bonus.
A single credit card sign-up bonus from a Hilton or IHG card can cover 3 to 5 nights at a beachfront hotel. That’s your entire hotel stay for the summer, completely free.
Quick math: The IHG One Rewards Premier Card offers 140,000 bonus points after meeting the minimum spend. The Holiday Inn Express on the Beach runs about 25,000 to 45,000 points per night. That’s potentially 3 to 5 FREE nights right there.
The 5 Best Beachfront Gulf Shores Hotels You Can Book With Points
All five of these properties are right on the Gulf — not “walking distance,” not “near the beach.” On. The. Beach. Here’s what you need to know about each one.
1. The Lodge at Gulf State Park, a Hilton Hotel — Gulf Shores Program: Hilton Honors | Points Cost: 70,000 pts/night
Card tip: The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card earns the most Hilton points fastest and includes a free night certificate every year. Book a cash night at the Lodge and you might be able to apply that cert directly.

2. Hotel Indigo Orange Beach — Gulf Shores, an IHG Hotel Program: IHG One Rewards | Points Cost: 48,000 pts/night
Card tip: The IHG One Rewards Premier Card gives you a free night certificate every year worth up to 40,000 points. That annual cert alone makes the card worth keeping long-term.
3. Embassy Suites by Hilton Gulf Shores Beach Resort — Gulf Shores Program: Hilton Honors | Points Cost: 50,000 to 80,000 pts/night
Card tip: Rack up Hilton points with any Hilton co-branded card. The Hilton Honors Surpass Card is a great middle-ground — solid earning rate and Priority Pass lounge access as a perk.

4. Hampton Inn and Suites Orange Beach/Gulf Front — Orange Beach Program: Hilton Honors | Points Cost: 30,000 to 50,000 pts/night
Card tip: If you’re new to Hilton points, start with the no-annual-fee Hilton Honors Card from American Express to start earning. Then upgrade later. This property is achievable with a modest points balance.

5. Holiday Inn Express Orange Beach — On the Beach, an IHG Hotel Program: IHG One Rewards | Points Cost: 25,000 to 45,000 pts/night
Card tip: IHG regularly runs 40% off points sales. Stock up during a sale, and this property could cost you almost nothing in real dollars. Pair with the IHG Premier Card to maximize earning.
What If You’re Renting a Beach House Instead of a Hotel?
Let’s be real — a lot of Midwestern families going to Gulf Shores, Fort Morgan, or Perdido Key aren’t staying in a hotel. They’re renting a house or condo through VRBO or Airbnb. More space, full kitchen, everyone together. We get it — we’ve done it both ways.
Here’s the good news: you can offset $750 to $1,000 off your vacation rental bill every summer with the right credit card strategy. And it’s not complicated.
The strategy: Open one new travel rewards or cash-back credit card each year, earn the welcome bonus, and apply those rewards directly to your rental booking.
Cards That Work Well for Vacation Rentals
The key: time your card opening strategically. Apply in January or February, hit the minimum spend by April, and have your welcome bonus rewards sitting and ready when you book your Gulf Shores week in late spring.
Real family math: Open a Chase Sapphire Preferred in January. Spend $4,000 in 3 months (groceries, gas, utilities — normal spending). Earn roughly 60,000 bonus points worth $750 in travel. Apply to your Fort Morgan rental in May. Your family’s accommodation bill drops by $750. Every. Single. Year.

The Annual Card Strategy: How to Stack This Every Summer
Here’s what separates people who pay full price for vacation every year from people who travel for almost nothing: they open one new card per year.
You don’t need to churn through 10 cards. You don’t need a spreadsheet the size of your mortgage documents. You need one card per year, timed right, with a welcome bonus big enough to cover your biggest vacation expense.
Year 1: IHG One Rewards Premier Card Welcome bonus: 140,000 points. That’s enough for multiple nights at the Holiday Inn Express or Hotel Indigo on the beach. The annual free night cert keeps paying you back every year you keep the card. (You can also earn more than one bonus with IHG since there are more cards to pick from.)
Year 2: Hilton Honors Surpass Card Welcome bonus: 130,000+ Hilton points. That covers 2 to 3 nights at the Hampton Inn or Embassy Suites. Now you’re mixing and matching programs. (You can also earn more than one bonus with Hilton since there are more cards to pick from.)
Year 3: Chase Sapphire Preferred or Capital One Venture Pivot to cash-back/travel credit strategy. Use the welcome bonus ($750-$1000) to offset your vacation rental. Now your hotel and your rental are partially or fully covered across back-to-back summers. (You can also earn more than one bonus with Chase and Capital One since there are more cards to pick from.)
Important: This strategy works because welcome bonuses reset with new cards. As long as you’re not opening cards you can’t manage responsibly, this is a completely legal, mainstream travel strategy that millions of families use. Trust me…you aren’t going to run out of points earning opportunities! This is a long term solution traveling for much less!

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need great credit to open these cards? Most travel rewards cards require good to excellent credit — generally a 670+ credit score. If you’re not there yet, focus on building credit first and revisit the strategy in 6 to 12 months.
Can I use points for peak summer weeks in July and August? Yes — points bookings have the same availability as cash bookings. But peak summer weeks sell out fast in Gulf Shores. Search early (February or March) for the best availability.
What if we want to stay in Fort Morgan instead? Fort Morgan is primarily a vacation rental area — there are very few hotels out that way, which is part of its charm. This is where the cash-back card strategy shines: use welcome bonus rewards to offset your VRBO or Airbnb rental instead.
Is this strategy only for experienced travelers? Not at all. If you can manage one credit card responsibly, you can do this. The key is hitting the welcome bonus spend with money you’d already be spending — groceries, gas, utilities — not new spending.
How many points do I need for a 5-night stay? At the Holiday Inn Express or Hampton Inn (the most affordable options on points), you’re looking at roughly 125,000 to 200,000 points for 5 nights. One or two credit card welcome bonuses gets you there easily.

I found out about points and miles accidentally.
I was researching index funds and happened upon the points and miles community through creators who also post about budgets, financial independence, and investing.
Points and miles allowed those people to travel and work toward financial independence simultaneously.
Thank goodness I got started when I did. The past almost two years of travel have been something we will never forget.
Earning points and miles through credit cards is only a good choice if you have the financial discipline to use them, like cash/debit cards.
Since we started traveling with points and miles, we have had more money going into our investment and savings accounts than ever.
Now I'm excited to teach you!
