You already know Hyatt. You know Hilton. But there is a whole world of stunning, independent boutique hotels that most people never think to book with points. That changes today.
Every property in this guide is bookable with points from Bilt, Capital One, or Citi. If you are not earning one of those currencies yet, my [Best Offers page] has the current welcome bonuses that can cover several of these nights with a single card.
I Prefer Hotel Rewards is the loyalty program for Preferred Hotels and Resorts. It covers more than 700 independent hotels, resorts, and residences across 85 countries. Think cliffside retreats in Santorini, 18th-century Georgian estates in Dublin, beachfront resorts in Florida, and historic lodges in New York. These are not cookie-cutter chain hotels. They are the kind of places that define the destination.

And here is the part that makes this worth paying attention to right now: Bilt Rewards just announced I Prefer as a brand-new transfer partner. Combined with Capital One and Citi, that means more people than ever can transfer points they already have to book these properties for free.
Let me walk you through everything.
I Prefer is the loyalty program run by Preferred Travel Group. The program is completely free to join, and you earn points on eligible stays at four hotel collections.
Preferred Hotels and Resorts is the flagship collection. Boutique premium hotels in more than 80 countries, covering everything from city design hotels to coastal resorts. Beyond Green is a collection of luxury hotels with a sustainability focus. Historic Hotels of America covers high-end, historically preserved properties in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Historic Hotels Worldwide includes former castles, villas, palaces, and monasteries that have been transformed into hotels across the world.
Together, this portfolio gives you access to properties that you simply cannot book through Hyatt or Hilton. That uniqueness is the whole point.
Joining I Prefer Hotel Rewards takes about two minutes and costs nothing. Here is exactly how to do it.
Go to iprefer.com and click Join for Free. You will be prompted to create an account with your name and email address. No credit card required.
Once you join you automatically receive Silver status. That means you immediately have access to exclusive member rates at participating properties, complimentary in-room Wi-Fi, early check-in and late checkout when available, enhanced room upgrades based on availability, and access to the full reward booking system including points redemptions and the I Prefer Reward Nights portal.
You can also download the I Prefer app on iOS or Android to manage your account, search properties, and track your points on the go.
After you create your account, bookmark this page before you transfer anything: iprefer.com/offer/i-prefer-reward-nights. This is the direct link to the award search and you need to be logged in to see the full inventory of bookable properties.
When you book directly with I Prefer (through iprefer.com, preferredhotels.com, the hotel directly, or their call centers), you earn 10 points per dollar spent on your room rate. Note: taxes, resort fees, and service charges do not count toward earning.
Status bumps those earnings. Gold members earn a 20% bonus on points per stay on top of the base Silver earning rate. Titanium members earn a 50% bonus on points per stay.
Do not book through third-party sites like Expedia or Hotels.com for stays you want to earn points on. Those bookings do not qualify.
This is where it gets interesting. Three major points currencies now transfer directly to I Prefer.
Bilt Rewards transfers at 1:2. Bilt just announced this partnership on June 22, 2026. This is brand new. For every 1,000 Bilt Points you transfer, you receive 2,000 I Prefer points. If you pay rent, you should absolutely have a Bilt card. Earning points on rent with no annual fee and then transferring to a hotel program like I Prefer is exactly the kind of move that makes your everyday spending count. Minimum transfer is 1,000 points for Silver, Gold, and Platinum members, and 2,000 points for Blue members. All transfers go in 1,000-point increments.
Capital One miles transfer at 1:2. For every 1,000 Capital One miles you transfer, you receive 2,000 I Prefer points. This applies to all Capital One miles-earning cards including the Venture, Venture X, VentureOne, and their business versions.
Citi ThankYou Rewards transfer at 1:2. As of April 19, 2026, Citi moved to a 1:2 ratio (previously it was 1:4). This applies to Citi Strata Premier and Citi Strata Elite cardholders.
Transfers from all three programs are irreversible. Confirm that the hotel you want is available before you transfer anything.
I Prefer has three status levels, and they work differently than most hotel programs. Status is based on your spending in a 12-month window, not the number of nights you complete. You also move up the moment you hit the next threshold. No waiting for your anniversary date.
Silver is the entry level and is automatically granted when you join. You earn 10 points per dollar, get enhanced room upgrades based on availability, complimentary Wi-Fi, early check-in and late checkout when available, exclusive member rates, and access to the full rewards system.
Gold kicks in at 25,000 points earned in a 12-month period. You earn a 20% bonus on points per stay on top of the base Silver earning rate, plus a welcome amenity at each property.
Titanium starts at 50,000 points. You earn a 50% bonus on points per stay, get a complimentary food and beverage offering at each stay which varies by property, a digital anniversary gift, and access to special offers and experiences.
Award nights start at 15,000 points per night and go up to 150,000 points per night at the highest-tier properties. Most of the properties you see on the site land between 30,000 and 75,000 points per night.
You can also book using a mix of points and cash, called I Prefer Reward Nights Plus. This starts at just 3,000 points plus a cash portion. You earn points on the cash part of that booking, just not the points portion.
Here is exactly how to find and book an award stay.
Go to iprefer.com/offer/i-prefer-reward-nights and sign in to your account. This is important. The site shows far fewer available properties when you are not logged in. Once signed in, you will see 200-plus properties that can be booked with points.
Search by region, country, state, or city. You can also sort by lowest or highest points required, which is helpful when you are flexible on destination and just want to find the best value.
When you find a property you want to book, click through to see the specific dates you want. The points cost at each property is fixed, meaning the same number of points is required regardless of whether you book a Tuesday in January or a Saturday in July. Compare the cash rate to the points cost before you transfer anything, since the math varies a lot by property and date.
Once you have confirmed availability and decided to book, transfer the points you need from your credit card program (Bilt, Capital One, or Citi) to your I Prefer account. Transfers complete almost instantly for most programs, though timing can vary. After the points land in your I Prefer account, return to the booking page and complete the reservation.
Not every redemption is equal. Here is a simple way to think about it.
If a room costs 30,000 I Prefer points per night, and the cash rate is $300, then each I Prefer point is worth 1 cent. To book that room with Capital One miles at a 1:2 transfer ratio, you would transfer 15,000 Capital One miles to get the 30,000 I Prefer points needed. That means you are getting about 2 cents per Capital One mile, which is a solid redemption.
The sweet spots are properties where the cash rate is high but the points cost is moderate. Expensive boutique hotels in Italy, Greece, or Santorini tend to show strong value. U.S. beach resorts during peak season can also work well when the cash rate climbs.
The weaker redemptions are at properties where the cash rate is low to begin with. In those cases, you might only get half a cent per point, which generally is not worth transferring.
Always do the math: divide the cash rate by the I Prefer points required to get your cents-per-point value. Anything above 1.5 cents per Citi or Capital One point is a good deal. Anything above 2 cents is excellent.
I Prefer is not specifically a family brand, but there are some genuinely great options for families who want something more memorable than a standard resort stay.
Quick reminder before you look at these numbers: every property below shows the cost in I Prefer points, but if you are transferring from Bilt, Capital One, or Citi, you only need half that amount. All three programs transfer at 1:2, so a property listed at 30,000 points per night costs you just 15,000 of your flexible points. Keep that math in mind as you scroll, because it makes these properties an even better deal than they first appear.
Hammock Beach Golf Resort and Spa in Palm Coast, Florida starts at 50,000 points per night. It is beachfront, family-friendly, and the kind of property that would cost several hundred dollars a night in peak season.

Bear Mountain Inn in New York starts at 30,000 points per night and sits at the base of Bear Mountain in the Hudson Valley. It is a Historic Hotels of America property and a genuinely beautiful rustic escape that works well for families who love the outdoors.

Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resort in Tucson, Arizona starts at 50,000 points per night plus $35 in fees. It is an intimate former guest ranch in the foothills with spectacular desert and mountain views, and the kind of place where kids can watch the sunset paint the Catalinas instead of staring at a hallway ice machine.

International properties worth planning a trip around
St. Helen’s Hotel, Dublin, Ireland starts at 30,000 points per night. An 18th-century Georgian estate with manicured lawns just outside the city center, it feels like staying at a castle without the castle price tag.

Hotel Angleterre, Lausanne, Switzerland starts at 50,000 points per night. A gorgeous Swiss Riviera property right on Lake Geneva, in a country where even modest hotels routinely run $400 or more per night in cash.

President Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa starts at 30,000 points per night. Beach, city, and mountain in one location, with a pool deck overlooking the Atlantic. Cape Town is one of the best value destinations in the world once your room is covered.

Porta Hotel Antigua, La Antigua, Guatemala starts at 30,000 points per night and is a beautifully restored colonial property in one of the most charming cities in Central America. It also carries the Beyond Green sustainability designation.

The Social House, Nairobi, Kenya starts at 30,000 points per night. A stylish, design-forward hub in the Kenyan capital with a perfect five-bubble TripAdvisor rating, it makes an ideal landing spot before or after a safari.

The properties are genuinely unique. These are not chain hotels with identical rooms in every city. Every property has its own history, character, and sense of place. That matters if you want your travel to feel like real travel.
The transfer ratio from Bilt and Capital One is 1:2, which effectively doubles your points before you even look at a rate. That math works in your favor at the right properties.
You can book using points plus cash if you do not have enough points for a full award night. The 3,000-point minimum makes that option accessible.
There are no blackout dates on award bookings. The points rate is fixed throughout the year, so your dates are not restricted.
The portfolio is limited compared to Hyatt or Hilton. There are roughly 200-plus properties bookable with I Prefer points, and only about 74 of those are in the United States. If you are traveling somewhere without a Preferred Hotels property, this program will not help you.
The website is not the most user-friendly. You need to be logged in to see the full inventory, which is not obvious. Searching can be slow, and the interface is clunkier than what you might expect from a modern loyalty program.
Points do not transfer between Bilt, Capital One, and Citi — they each go directly into I Prefer. Once you transfer, you cannot get your original points back. That irreversibility means you need to be sure before you move anything.
Not all I Prefer properties are available for points redemptions. Some properties in the Preferred Hotels portfolio participate in the points program and some do not, so a hotel you find on preferredhotels.com may not show up on the award search at all.
Award nights do not count toward elite spending thresholds, so a free stay does not help you reach Gold or Titanium status.
Create a free I Prefer account at iprefer.com. You automatically receive Silver status when you join.
If you have Capital One miles, Bilt points, or Citi ThankYou points, link those accounts and identify a property you want to book before you transfer anything.
Search iprefer.com/offer/i-prefer-reward-nights while logged in to see the full selection of award properties. Sort by the region you are planning to visit and compare the points cost to the cash rate.
Run the math. Divide the cash rate by the I Prefer points required. Then factor in your transfer ratio to see the true cost in your original currency.
Transfer points only after you confirm your dates are available and you are ready to book.
Here is the current full list of credit card programs that transfer to I Prefer Hotel Rewards.
Bilt Rewards transfers at 1:2. Earned on rent, mortgage, dining, and everyday purchases. The Bilt Mastercard has no annual fee. This is the newest partner and a great entry point for anyone who has been accumulating Bilt points.
Capital One miles transfer at 1:2. Earned on the Venture, Venture X, VentureOne, and their business card versions. Capital One miles are flexible and also transfer to airlines, making this a versatile currency to hold.
Citi ThankYou Rewards transfer at 1:2. Earned on Citi Strata Premier and Citi Strata Elite cards. Note that Citi changed the transfer ratio from 1:4 to 1:2 in April 2026, so if you read older content about Citi and I Prefer, the math in those articles no longer applies.
I Prefer Hotel Rewards is not the flashiest program, and it is not the right fit for every trip. But for the traveler who wants something genuinely distinctive, boutique, and memorable, it opens doors that Hyatt and Hilton simply do not.
With Bilt now in the mix as a transfer partner alongside Capital One and Citi, more people than ever have the points currency to take advantage of this program. The key is doing your homework before you transfer, running the math on the properties that interest you, and acting when you find real value.
These are the kind of hotels your followers will remember. A Georgian estate in Dublin. A cliffside retreat in Greece. A rustic lodge in the Hudson Valley. Points and miles are how you get there without paying full price.
Is I Prefer Hotel Rewards free to join?
Yes. Creating an account at iprefer.com takes about two minutes, requires no credit card, and you receive Silver status instantly. Silver includes member rates, free Wi-Fi, room upgrades based on availability, and access to the award booking system.
What credit cards transfer to I Prefer Hotel Rewards?
Three programs currently transfer to I Prefer: Bilt Rewards, Capital One miles, and Citi ThankYou Rewards. All three transfer at a 1:2 ratio, meaning 1,000 points becomes 2,000 I Prefer points. Bilt is the newest partner, added in June 2026.
How many points do I need for a free night?
Award nights start at 15,000 I Prefer points per night, with most properties falling between 30,000 and 75,000 points. Because all transfer partners move points at 1:2, a 30,000-point night costs just 15,000 of your flexible points.
Are there blackout dates on I Prefer award nights?
No. The points cost at each property is fixed year-round, so a Saturday in July costs the same as a Tuesday in January. Availability still applies, so confirm your dates before transferring points.
Can I book with points and cash if I do not have enough points?
Yes. I Prefer Reward Nights Plus lets you combine points and cash starting at just 3,000 points, and you earn points on the cash portion of the booking.
Why can’t I see all the award properties when I search?
You must be logged in to your I Prefer account to see the full inventory of 200-plus bookable properties. Searching while logged out shows far fewer options, which trips up a lot of first-time users.

I found out about points and miles accidentally.
I was researching index funds and happened upon the points and miles community through creators who also post about budgets, financial independence, and investing.
Points and miles allowed those people to travel and work toward financial independence simultaneously.
Thank goodness I got started when I did. The past almost two years of travel have been something we will never forget.
Earning points and miles through credit cards is only a good choice if you have the financial discipline to use them, like cash/debit cards.
Since we started traveling with points and miles, we have had more money going into our investment and savings accounts than ever.
Now I'm excited to teach you!
